Sweetened beverages

A sweetened beverage is any beverage with added sugar. These are drinks like tea, sodas, fruits juices and sports drinks.

Whether genetic or just a habit from childhood, we all enjoy a sugary drink now and then, sometimes a little more often than we should.

Consuming high sugar drinks can lead to health problems such as unhealthy weight gain, tooth decays, heart disease, fatty liver and type 2 diabetes. Since sugar does not have any nutrients, they are a source of empty calories.

How to help your Child avoid Sugary drinks;

  • Start early- give water and continue breastfeeding to children below 1 year. When giving yogurt, opt for natural yogurt instead of the flavored ones with artificial sweeteners.

  • Read the label- always check on the sugar content in drinks before purchasing them for our children.

Some labeling will come with a color summary on the back of the packaging:

  • Add more flavor- use whole fresh fruits by adding them to your water to make it flavorful.

  • Avoid juices, sodas and sports drinks- they only contain artificial sweeteners and caffeine which are harmful to our children's health.
