Stress refers to a state of feeling tense, overwhelmed, worn out, or drained. While a small amount of stress can be beneficial as it can motivate us, excessive stress can make even simple tasks appear daunting. Stress can result from various factors, including daily hassles, major life changes like a divorce, and life circumstances such as poverty.

To protect against stress, there are several factors that play a role, such as experiencing daily uplifting moments, adopting healthy coping strategies, and having protective elements in life such as supportive family and friends.

When facing a stressful situation, individuals may exhibit acute symptoms, which can be physical, cognitive, or behavioral in nature.

Physical symptoms may include

  • Headaches

  • Migraines

  • back pain

  • Sweating

  • Nausea

  • Indigestion

  • Chest pain

  • Fatigue

Emotional and Cognitive symptoms may manifest as

  • Worry

  • Irritability

  • Anger

  • Loss of motivation

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Mood swings

  • Decreased sex drive

  • Memory problems

Behavioral symptoms can include

  • Nail biting

  • Restlessness

  • Teeth grinding

  • Disrupted sleep, eating, and exercise habits,

  • Interpersonal conflicts

  • Social withdrawal

  • Substance use

  • Procrastination
