Hyperacidity or Acid Reflux is a common condition which happens when the acid in the stomach flows back up to the food pipe or when your stomach is irritated by excess acid. This gives us the feeling of heartburn (kiungulia moyo). This mostly happens after eating a large meal or eating specific foods.

If you have been experiencing this, here are some tips to help you:

Tip #1: Eat slowly. Set aside some time to eat your food and ensure you chew your food well. Do not rush, enjoy your food.

Tip #2: Avoid overeating. It’s better to eat small meals more frequently instead of three large meals daily. This ensures that your stomach doesn’t get too full and builds up more acid.

Tip #3: Avoid certain foods. If you notice a type of food causes heartburn, avoid it. Such foods include: fatty foods, spicy foods, tomatoes, onions, garlic, sukuma wiki, sweet potatoes, beans, coffee, tea, chocolate, sodas and alcohol.

Tip #4: Sit up after eating. Avoid lying down immediately after eating to help keep acid in the stomach, where it belongs. This means no naps after lunch and no late suppers. Eat at least three hours before you go to bed.

Tip #5: Do not exercise after eating. Avoid vigorous exercise for a couple of hours after eating. A simple walk is fine, but a more intense workout, especially if it involves bending over, can send acid into your food pipe.

Tip #6: Avoid NSAIDs. Avoid using Non-Steroidal Inflammatory Drugs, as they irritate & damage the stomach lining after long-term use. These are painkillers such as brufen or aspirin.
