Meal Prep Guide: We know it’s not always easy to choose healthy foods every day, especially with the busy lives we lead. Planning for some or all of your meals ahead of time can go a long way to help with this. Not only will it save you time, but it will also help you eat the right amount of healthier foods more often, instead of reaching for junk or fast food. Even better, it can help you save money! Here’s how you can get started:

  1. Create Your Meal Plan: Invest some time in writing down what you plan on eating for each day of the week. A weekly menu can help you enjoy variety instead of eating the same foods every day. If you live with others, include them too to make sure everyone’s preferences are covered.

  2. Create A Shopping List: Every meal plan needs a clear guide on what to buy - a shopping list. This will help you buy the right foods & avoid harmful foods. It also helps by keeping your budget in check.

  3. Save Time With Ready-Made Ingredients: Most vegetable vendors will clean and cut your leafy vegetables so that you don’t have to. You can also ask them for freshly sliced or chopped fruits. Remember to wash your fruits and vegetables before you use them.

  4. Leftover Magic - Cook Once For Two Meals: When cooking your evening meal, make enough to last you the next day. Leftover meals can be tomorrow’s breakfast or lunch, if stored in a fridge. This way you’ll avoid skipping meals (especially breakfast) the next day and spend less on eating out.

  5. Freezer Time-Saver. If you have access to a freezer, use it to store time-consuming meals such as legumes (beans, ndengu, kamande), meat and poultry. When you have some free time during the weekend, you can prepare a week’s worth of food.

  6. Make Fruits A Healthy Daily Habit. Buy one piece of fruit every day on your way home, or make fruits visible and easy to reach so that you’ll remember to eat them.
