What is Eczema?
Eczema is a condition often caused by our bodies’ reactions to allergens, (otherwise harmless substances that can trigger our immune system to respond in a way that causes a range of symptoms).
Symptoms of eczema can include rashes, itchiness, swelling, patches, dry skin and flaking of the skin.
Eczema often occurs in people who have allergies & can also run in families.
Tips for managing your eczema flare ups:
Use Unscented Thick Moisturizing Creams: Use right after a bath or a shower, to prevent your skin from getting too dry.
You can also use unscented petroleum jelly or emulsifying cream, which can be found in pharmacies.
Don't Scratch: The urge to scratch can be quite strong, but will only make things worse!
Instead of scratching, try pressing and patting on the skin.
Wear Cool, Smooth-Textured Clothing: Reduce irritation by avoiding clothing that's rough, tight or scratchy.
Also, wear appropriate clothing in hot weather or during exercise to prevent excessive sweating.
Natural fabrics (e.g cotton) tend to irritate less than the synthetics fabrics
Try To Avoid The Following:
Over dressing young children
Being too hot or sweating too much (Gently dab your skin with a dry cotton cloth when you sweat)
Stress or worry
Harsh soaps or cleaning products
Sampling oils and soaps on your skin without your doctor’s advice.
Over the counter steroid cream purchases
Perfumes
Wool or synthetic fabrics (like polyester)
Some food products like milk, yoghurt, eggs, fish or nuts (Check your diet plan below on how to manage eating such foods) An allergy test may be recommended by your pediatrician.
